A proposal for the Master?s Research Project in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the UTeach Summer Mater?s Program Geosciences Cohort Submitted by C. Elaine Bohls-Graham 2 October 2007 When it comes to fieldtrip experiences for secondary/post-secondary geoscience students, the opportunities occur infrequently. There is always a monetary problem; after all, one must ?get? the students to the site. There is also the problem of ?time.? Even more crucial is the lack of a useful, relevant guidebook that pertains to whichever fieldtrip site the group wishes to visit. Teachers oftentimes do not have the time to write a guidebook; some sites may have a guidebook or two, but said guidebook may not be relevant to the subject area or may be geared to elementary students. The purpose of this proposal is to fill such a gap at one specific site. In the state of California, the University of California system has the distinct privilege of being stewards to the Natural Reserve System, a series of thirty-five natural land sites. Each site is protected and set aside for use at the university-level with research projects and for public outreach programs, such as K-12 educational programs and field experiences. One site, the Landels-Hills Big Creek Reserve, is located along the Big Sur coastline and under the stewardship of the University of California at Santa Cruz. It is at this locality that there is a need for a geosciences-based guidebook. Included for the proposed study are a field research component and a writing component. Both components would be utilized to develop a fieldtrip guidebook for use at the Landels-Hills Big Creek Reserve, specifically for, but not limited to, secondary-level geoscience students. This guidebook would contain fieldtrip stops, as well as curriculum-specific geoscience activities. Several additional stops would be included outside of the Reserve, as well.
