Hello, I took an Ethnobotany Sierra Institute course with Ed Grumbine in 2003 and visited Boronda and Redwood camps. That visit was a highlight of the course, and I very much appreciated the Reserve as a place for learning botany, native plants, and natural history. I am now teaching a course on gardening at UCSC, and have planned for a group backpacking trip, seeing that my students are extremely interested in ethnobotany and natural history in addition to ecological horticulture. Learning field botany and natural history are the academic foci of this trip, and of course we will be building community and sharing outdoor skills as well. For our trip we will need a camp site, cooking area, water and a latrine. I am an experienced backpacker, but nonetheless am planning to work with someone from the UCSC Recreation/OPERS Department on this trip because a second hand is appreciated, not only when out there, but at this point planning the logistics, crossing the T's and dotting the I's. Teaching keeps me busy! I see Boronda camp is available a May 16-18. This works well for us as I am seeking to take this group and another to Pinnacles on May 9-11. If needed, we could come to the reserve (Redwood or Boronda or otherwise) May 9-11 instead. As for the emergency contact below, I am unsure who the Rec. Department will advise us to list. I am now listing one of the Rec. Department staff and would like to reconfirm that this is the appropriate person when we confirm this reservation. Feel free to call my home/voicemail at 831-207-4206 or my office at 831-459-3177. Email works fine to -- shawstafari@gmail.com Thank you, Dave Shaw
