Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

Elements of Field Geology is an introduction to geological mapping in the field. We use the Big Creek site to show students how to draw geologic contacts where you can't necessarily put your finger on it. Instead these students learn to rely on more subtle features such as changes in character of hillslopes, vegetation and soils. The student map three units and the contacts between them: (1) Franciscan greenstone; (2) Sur Series granite and marble; and (3) Franciscan shale matrix melange. The ultimate goal is for the students to test (with their maps and geological cross-sections) two disparate geological models for the occurrence of Sur Series rocks as a thrust bound slice between Franciscan Greenstone.
