My project involves description and quantification of the biogeographic transitions that occur in birds in central and southern California. The nature of these transitions in the Point Conception vicinity is fairly well known for plants, some mammals, and marine organisms, but it?s barely mentioned in other than in a general way in the older ornithological literature and it has received no recent treatment. NRS sites are nicely distributed to allow studies that can shed light on this issue. I will gather data that may allow me to relate various forces underlying the apparent effects we see to the southern and central CA avifaunas. The factors that influence the pattern may include wintering vs. breeding distributions, migration effects, historical changes in distribution, density effects, and habitats influences. I will probably conduct point counts in the breeding season and possibly in winter at each of several NRS sites, on Vandenberg AFB, and in several other areas. I will gather other data sets that might provide the kinds of data useful to my inquiry.
