For the past year I have been collecting, researching, and identifying the native plants of the Los Angeles basin and their traditional medicinal value. My research has been done primarily with Mark Acuna, a nationally renowned ethnobotanist and Tongva Elder. Through research with tribal councils, elders, and ethnobotanists I am attempting to preserve the Tongva Tribes ancient knowledge of medicinal plants that is quickly dissapearing. My research has already led to the cataolouging and identification of over 70 plants species and their traditional uses. I am currently writing a grant to expand my research to Santa Cruz County and the Big Sur Region. The purpose of this current trip is preliminary research. I came to the reserve last March and performed various transects and identification walks as part of my ininital research to record some of the plants present in Landels Hill Big Creek Reserve. This brief trip will be a continuation of that trip to record some of the plants in a different season and work to identify a wider array of plants. As part of my research I have been working all this week to collect a diverse array of phtographs and plant species that are indicative of the ecosystems found within the Central California coastal region. The photographs or plant sample will be brought back to to my research station at Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens, where we will work to identify the species and begin to research traditional uses and the scientifically proven medicinal uses of these plant species. My photographs and samples from this visit will serve to enhancce my preliminary evidence for my thesis work and the grants I am writing. The Big Creek Reserve is a perfect site for me to begin my research of the Big Sur Region. I'm sorry for the late notice on this visit. I understand if its not possible. I didnt expect to have time to stop by the reserve.
