Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

As non-academics (alumni and emeritus of UCSC) who are members of and contributors to various conservancy efforts and conservation lobbying groups both locally and internationally, we wish to gain some sense of the study and preservation of intact, undisturbed ecosystems that the University of California Natural Reserve Systems has set. In particular, we're interested in observing a cross-section of habitats and their associated migrants. While we'd be interested in volunteering our time in the context of any ongoing research that might be being conducted during our visit, we propose to: a) record our birdlife observations keyed to an appropriate Reserve map, b) leave this data with the Reserve, and c) since several of our members have extensive web development experience (Patrick Davidson and Habib Krit: expert level; Khue Duong: novice), we'd like to construct a database with a web interface suitable for entry, display and search of birdlife observations keyed to location at the Reserve. We'd propose building this web application in consultation with the Reserve and any other interested parties. It would be constructed using open-source and open-standards tools and languages (MySQL, PHP, XHTML and CSS), and suitable for running on an Apache machine, such as is run by the Reserve's current webhost Redshift.
