I will be teaching a "Field Biology Quarter" course for undergraduate students at UCLA. The main purpose of the course is to expose students to field-based research, including learning about desert plant life and conduct small research projects. The main goal of the research projects is to teach student how the scientific method works, including hypothesis formulation, data collection, data analysis and write up. We will use trails, meet with staff (and hopefully work with them), visit multiple places in the reserve to learn about the geological, habitat, and plant diversity in the mojave desert, may use plots for diversity analysis and controlled replication, perhaps collect a few branches of plants for identification using keys, will measure plants in situ (height, leaf and flower morphology), and will make observations on plant-animals interactions (e.g., flower visitors, herbivores).
