Coastal vegetated habitats (CVHs), such as salt marshes, are ‘hot spots’ of organic matter preservation and are responsible for 50% of the total annual carbon burial in all marine sediments. While these habitats aid in the preservation of organic matter (OM) the mechanisms for enhanced carbon storage are still unknown. One proposed mechanism for enhanced organic matter preservation in sediments is sulfurization—the abiotic addition of sulfur to reactive organic structures—and although it has been observed in other ecosystems (e.g. mangroves, particles in the ocean, deep sea sediments) its significance in salt marshes has not yet been explored. This project is aimed at elucidating the role of sulfurization in carbon preservation in salt marshes by understanding the geochemical changes in sediment providing preliminary results for future work. Project Goals The main goals of this project are to determine whether or not OM sulfurization contributes to carbon preservation in Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve (CSM) sediments and to investigate the organic matter preservation potential of diverse marsh sub-environments. My proposed research will address the following questions: Q1: Is there evidence for the sulfurization of organic matter in CSM marsh sediments? Q2: Does the sediment geochemistry differ between 5 surface-defined sub-environments in CSM?
