The research proposed is an experiment to test the attractiveness of candidate pheromones of longhorned beetles. Previous research has indicated that longhorned beetles of different species use pheromones of similar molecular structure. We have produced a variety of isomers of this basic structural theme that we predict are pheromones for different species, but we do not yet know which isomers are used by which species. The experimental design involve placing a transect of 18 stakes 1 m apart. A sticky card and pheromone emitter will be attached to each stake. Each trap will be treated with a different compound. Every day for three days we will remove captured beetles from the cards, and on the third day the stakes will be removed. Thus, the experiment will run only three days. We anticipate that the traps will capture no more than thirty beetles of any species, and thus will have little if any impact on natural populations.
