Our primary research objective is to use the story of the NRS to understand the role of biological field stations in American environmental history?including science, politics, policy, management, and ecological change?since World War II. A broader goal of our group, based in the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara, is to identify, inventory, develop, and encourage the conservation of primary source materials with potential historical value related to the NRS and the sites it encompasses. We believe that these materials will be of great significance not only to future historians and archivists, but also to students, scientists, and managers. The goals of the UC NRS Archive Project are to: 1) Create, build, and maintain a database of historical materials related to the NRS and the sites it encompasses?including new materials produced through the project, such as oral histories 2) Make this database available through a searchable, curated Web site with links to related documents, databases, and catalogs 3) Encourage relevant individuals and institutions to develop conservation plans for past, present, and future NRS related historical materials 4) Launch an archival conservation program, based at the Cheadle Center on the UCSB campus, for UCSB NRS related materials and materials with system-wide value that do not have other appropriate or permanent homes 5) Promote the use of NRS related historical resources and materials for teaching, research, outreach, and management
