I plan to use habitat associations to identify survey locations for five lizard species in western Riverside County. These species are all listed as 'Covered' in the Western Riverside County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (WRCMSHCP) and include: coast horned lizard (Phrynosoma coronatum blainvillei), granite spiny lizard (Sceloporus orcutti), sagebrush lizard (S. graciosus vandenburgianus), orange-throated whiptail (Cnemidophorus hyperythrus beldingi), and coastal western whiptail (C. tigris multiscutatus). Historical point observation data will be combined with current surveys to create species location databases. The WRCMSHCP area will be divided into 25 hectare cells and environmental attributes such as temperature, precipitation, elevation, vegetation and geology will be quantified within each cell using available GIS layers. The environment at all cells within the WRCMSHCP area will then be quantified and values at locations known to support given species can be used to identify areas with similar environments, but without confirmed observations. I have not been to the Motte Rimrock Reserve yet, but anticipate that only 3-4 visits would be necessary to obtain GPS locations for most of my target species at several locations within the Reserve. No capture, handling, or collection of lizards is necessary. No use of housing or laboratory resources located at the Reserve is necessary. I anticipate that surveys will take place between 06:00 and 11:00, if access is granted.
