Coastal Sage Scrub Transects: We will perform 500-meter transects through coastal sage scrub habitat. Each transect will be visited three times beginning in February and ending in June. All transects will be marked with a four-foot wooden stake at each end and biodegradable flagging tape or pin flags along the route. All markings will be removed at the end of the season. If any California Gnatcatcher or Cactus Wren are observed, we will initiate a nest search within one week. Nests will only be approached once; all subsequent monitoring will occur from a distance. Markers will only be installed a minimum of 10 m from nests. Nests will be monitored for each species until a single successful nest in each park is observed. Burrowing Owl Surveys: We will survey grassland habitat for burrowing owls using 12 minute variable radius point counts. These counts will include playback of burrowing owl calls. If burrowing owls are located, burrows in the area will be mapped. The area will be revisited the next day and a complete census of all burrowing owls will be performed. No markers will be installed at any point. All points will be visited three times between March and July. All visits will be single-day only, no overnight facilities or lab space will be needed.
