The goal of this proposal is to further examine the differences in population responses of hatchery-reared Sacramento Perch (broodstock source: Sindicich Lagoon, CA; hatchery created and maintained by CM Woodley) to the Sacramento perch inhabiting the ORW. The comparison of the populations would reveal whether or not the introduced populations are surviving in conditions that are energetically costly. Additionally, comparing the laboratory metabolic rates with the in situ (lake-side) rates would eliminate any ?laboratory effect? for more conclusive results. The information gained will be used to describe the optimal habitat for Sacramento perch restoration, thus avoiding poor translocation success. Specifically, the objectives of this project are to: 1) compare the metabolic responses of the Owens River watershed (ORW) to hatchery-reared Sacramento perch at 12 and 18 ?C; 2) compare the metabolic responses of the ORW Sacramento perch measured at SNARL and in situ; 3) compare the physiological tolerances of the ORW to hatchery-reared Sacramento perch; 4) to document the breeding ecology of the ORW Sacramento perch; and 5) compare the habitat and water quality composition of the areas that Sacramento perch occupy in the ORW to the restoration sites in their native range. Some of the objectives have already been completed, such as the metabolic response of the ORW at 12 ?C, the metabolic responses of hatchery-reared Sacramento perch at 12 and 18 ?C, and the ORW and hatchery-reared Sacramento perch physiological tolerances. The comparison of the habitat and water quality would be stronger with a second year of data to ensure that the 2005 data resembles a typical year. The new objectives are to measure the metabolic rate of the OWR Sacramento perch at 18?C and in situ, and to further the description of the ORW Sacramento perch breeding ecology.
