RIBBiTR-palooza Sierra Nevada - Amphibian Resilience Workshop - August 2024 This is the third in a series of training workshops presented by the NSF-funded RIBBiTR Biological Integration Institute. The goal of the training workshops known as RIBBiTR-paloozas is to conduct hands-on trainings for graduate students and postdocs. These workshops are designed to provide a foundational training in integrative biology and conservation such that we will prepare students and postdocs to work across multiple biological scales, think critically and creatively about complex problems, and work in dynamic groups to research and understand resilience to global problems. The training workshops are for graduate students and postdocs that are not currently affiliated with RIBBiTR, and is part of our outreach and training program and Broader Impacts activities. We gear the training workshops toward postbaccalaureate students, graduate students, and postdocs from a national and international applicant pool, who are aiming for careers in scientific research and amphibian conservation. All of our workshops are organized and implemented in key regions (or countries) where amphibian declines are on-going and there is high interest in the scientific methods that can inform amphibian conservation efforts. In the past, the workshops occurred in Brazil and Costa Rica. This workshop is well located in the Sierra Nevada, where amphibians are declining but are remarkably well studied and shown natural resilience and have benefitted from multi-agency recovery efforts. This locale demonstrates how research and management can work together to address biodiversity challenges. The workshop will be based on our amphibian research of the last two decades and will train participants in the methods and protocols that have proved to be invaluable for amphibian research and conservation. Activities will include presentations and university-style lectures, training in laboratory and field techniques, and extensive guidance in study design, data analysis, and concise scientific communication. We will train students in field and laboratory methods, including ecological methods for population monitoring, experimental design and statistical analysis of complex datasets, host and pathogen biology (e.g., methods for studying immunology and the microbiome), as well as provide an overview of global change processes and their impacts on amphibian biodiversity. The history of endangered amphibian research at SNARL, and the relationships between SNARL and regional wildlife managers, make SNARL a natural fit for training in wildlife conservation. Additionally, the workshop participants will receive active mentoring and guidance in generating their own hypotheses and conducting their own independent investigations on amphibian conservation and disease ecology. At the conclusion of the workshop, trainees will have produced detailed protocols, project summaries, and will present their findings in a mini research symposium. As such, students will be engaged in highly meaningful and intellectually challenging research activities that will support and facilitate long-term involvement in scientific research focused on amphibian conservation. The RIBBiTR scientists from SNARL and other institutions will provide lectures and in depth training on amphibian conservation research methods as described above.
