Increase in atmospheric temperatures due to global warming is translated into an increase in water temperature for aquatic ecosystems. The project aims to investigate the role of heterotrophic bacteria in influencing phytoplankton thermal tolerance in montane, sub-alpine, and alpine aquatic ecosystems. We would like to understand if shifting temperatures along an elevation gradient will force pathogenic, mutualistic or neutral interactions between phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria. We would also investigate if increasing temperatures will affect phytoplankton morphology. Phytoplankton are at the base of the food chain and contribute to healthy aquatic ecosystems. The interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria strongly influence carbon and nutrient cycling and regulate the productivity and stability of food webs. Shift in phytoplankton-bacteria interactions might have tremendous effects on downstream ecosystems. Anticipating the evolution of aquatic ecosystems will enable conservation efforts and regulation implementation to protect their fragile equilibrium. We will also kickstart another project in the vicinity of Lyell and Maclure glaciers. For this project, we will collect samples of supraglacial, subglacial snow and associated lakes in order to establish baseline data in this area for future field seasons.
