Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory

Our plan is to study the relationships between phytoplankton and bacteria in freshwater ecosystems. Specifically, we want to look at the role of bacteria in conferring thermal tolerance to algal communities across an elevation gradient. For this we will sample water from various lakes in Yosemite National Park, Inyo National Forest, and Sequoia National Forest, belonging to different altitude ranges (montane, sub-alpine, alpine). Back at SNARL, in our aquariums, we will run microbiome assembly experiments using our lab strain of Chlamydomonas rheinardtii. With the newly formed microbial communities, we will then run temperature assay and monitor growth performances of C. rheinardtii.
