The proposed research at SNARL will investigate how landscape factors drive genetic differentiation patterns in Sierra lake aquatic invertebrates. Landscape, historical, and biological factors drive the spatial distribution of genetic diversity in a species. Landscape features like steep topography, elevation, and unsuitable habitat can act as obstacles to dispersal, potentially restricting gene flow between geographically close populations. With a variety of dispersal strategies and abilities, aquatic invertebrates are an ideal group for understanding how mountainous landscapes shape genetic diversity patterns, as well as how aquatic diversity is responding to climate warming. In the Sierra Nevada of California, very few studies have addressed the dispersal abilities or landscape genetic structure of aquatic invertebrates, particularly in lentic systems. Studies in other temperate montane aquatic systems have found high intraspecific diversity at multiple spatial scales among aquatic invertebrates, making it likely that Sierra aquatic invertebrates exhibit similar trends due to limited dispersal driven by strong landscape gradients. Furthermore, high intraspecific genetic diversity may correspond to uniquely local adaptations, and a single morphological species may contain cryptic lineages that incorporate drastically different life history strategies and elevational preferences. Aquatic macroinvertebrates play varied and essential roles in aquatic food webs, and so should be accounted for in management decisions for endangered aquatic species like mountain-yellow-legged frogs.
