The style and manner in which Panum Crater violently erupted along the southern shores of Mono Lake ~640 years ago is recorded in the resulting pyroclastic deposits. Close examination of this record will provide valuable insight in terms of both (1) understanding how this young and explosive eruption occurred, and (2) how to prepard for future eruptions of this character in the Mono Basin of eastern California. The purpose of this undergraduate thesis research project (a requirement of all geology majors from CSUF) is to investigate the most proximal volcanic stratigraphy in terms of thickness, grain size and componentry, as well as examine the erupted particle textures upon return to CSUF via scanning electron microscopy. Field mapping and sampling will occur over 2 days followed by extensive granulometric and textural examination of deposits at CSUF.
