We would like to use a dorm, kitchen, and meeting space at SNARL for our Geography Field Methods Class on August 31 ? September 2. During the class we will be visiting various sites throughout the central eastern Sierra to conduct a wide variety of short field exercises. We have two off-site cultural geography exercises and one off-site physical geography exercises: Bodie or Bishop (to examine the culturally constructed landscapes of the ?Old West?), Downtown Mammoth (to do a tourism survey), and Mono Lake (vegetation transects across changing soils, we will get the appropriate permit). We would also like to conduct a stream survey, but we don?t have a site yet for the stream survey. We would like to students to use MJP Student Stream Flowmeters to examine how stream flow changes with the morphology of the stream and the location of the meter in the stream. An example of the flowmeter is at this website: http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/View_Catalog_Page.asp?mi=7107&title=mjp+student+stream+flowmeter The experiment would take about three hours. We would not collect plant, animal, or water samples. There would be several students wading into the streams to conduct this experiment. Kim Rose mentioned that Convict Creek runs through the reserve and that there are a number of streams located off the property: Mammoth Creek, McGee Creek, and Hot Creek. We plan to visit the sites in June to determine which site would be best for the class and least intrusive to the environment and other studies.
