The purpose of this long term project is to understand how the environment, most notably latitude and altitude, influence avian reproductive biology by exploiting the broad distribution of the house wren, Troglodytes aedon. To date, we have established four study sites- one each at high and low elevations in the US and Costa Rica. At each site we are collecting basic life history data (age at reproduction, clutch size, duration of breeding stages, and reproductive success), data on mating systems and strategies, incubation behavior, extra-pair behaviors, song, and hormone-behavior interactions. In the 2008 season, we are focussing our efforts on understanding male song swyntax in the context of reproductive aggression and mate attraction.
