The unified neutral theory of biodiversity is a controversial hypothesis about how biodiversity is maintained innature, one that contradicts an enormous amount of ecological intuition. However, the development of field tests torefute this hypothesis has been hampered by the long generation times and large spatial scales of natural systems.Here, I propose a study that relies on the experimentally tractable scales of algal communities that inhabit streams toconduct a novel test of the unified neutral theory.
