Beginning in July, 2007 (after the cows leave), I will be setting up an herbivory exclosure experiment to quantify the impact of herbivory on Pinus jeffreyi seedling mortality at different elevations. I will be erecting several wire mesh cages at each site in which I will plant several seedlings. I will also set up open control plots without cages. The Pinus jeffreyi seedlings were grown from seed collected near SNARL and Deadman Flat. After planting, seedlings will be watered several times to aid in overcoming transplant stress. All seedlings and materials will be removed from the sites in fall of 2007. I will be using the land behind SNARL near the snowfences; the Deadman Flat snowfence site; and Valentine Camp along the entrance road.
