Conduct studies of the influence of sediment on benthic invertebrate communities of selected streams in the Sierra Nevada. Surveys include physical habitat transects describing the geomorphology of the channel at the reach-scale and at the local patch-scale with respect to sediment deposition patterns. Research will examine deposition in relation to watershed disturbance and how this influences the integrity of aquatic life use indicators in the stream. SNARL will be used as a base of operations as in other research conducted there, but most field sites will be distant from the lab so extended periods will be spent away from SNARL facilities. In addition to field work, SNARL stream mesocosm channels will be used during this period to study the influence of experimental sediment addition on benthic invertebrates and substrate features. Field and lab studies will be conducted with the the aid of multiple laboratory technicians employed through UCSB Marine Science Institute.
