My objectives are: 1. To assess how spatial heterogeneity affects primary production of algae via its control over diversity and the turnover of species composition among habitat patches. 2. To determine how intermittent disturbance, and the subsequent process of re-colonization of patches, can moderate the impacts of diversity on primary production of algae. To address these questions, I will manipulate flow heterogeneity and substrate scour of riffle habitats in 30 Sierran streams that span a large natural gradient in algal diversity. I am requestion housing at SNARL for my graduate student, Rachel Shulman, and 2 undergraduate REUs (yet to be decided) for the duration of this project. I would like to reserve housing for these 3 students from July 1st to September 5th. Myself and a post-doc, Danuta Bennett, will be supervising experimental set-up as well as final sampling of the project. As such, I would like to reserve housing for myself and Danuta for the following dates: July 1-10 and August 22nd-September 5th. I will likely schedule short visits to help the students periodically through the summer, but since I cannot predict the students' needs a priori, I will have to wait to reserve housing for these additional visits until a later date.
