The Papaveraceae (poppy) plant family has a known genetic system of gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) that prevents inbreeding. This system has previously been characterized in only two European species Papaver rhoeas and P. nudicaule. Species that have some form of GSI typically possess dozens of copies (alleles) at this genetic locus that encode for different specifities and recognition. I have identified approximately 35 potential S-alleles from native California poppy species, Argemone munita, Platystemon californicus, and Romneya coulteri. I intend to collect stigmatic and leaf tissue for DNA analyses of these alleles and neutral molecular markers to determine the number of S-alleles in each species, the extent of divergence among those alleles, and the distribution of S-alleles among populations of each species.
