The purpose of my research is to conduct pedestrian archaeological surveys and limited testing of selected interior regions of the Santa Cruz Island Reserve as part of my dissertation research to document archaeological sites and establish both an environmental and a chronological context for interior settlement. Environmental data will be collected to determine the nature and distribution of local resources and small-scale testing will recover material appropriate for radiocarbon dating and future oxygen isotopic analysis. The spatial and temporal distribution of sites from the selected interior areas will be evaluated to provide a better understanding of how the Santa Cruz Island Chumash organized themselves across the landscape and how these strategies changed as their society evolved from hunter-gatherer bands into a simple chiefdom.
