Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The purpose of this trip will be to complete installation of artificial coverboards for inventory and monitoring of amphibians and reptiles on Santa Cruz Island. This work is in conjunction with inventory and monitoring studies being conducted for the National Park Service and Nature Conservancy. The coverboards are rectangular pieces of wood (pine or composition board) 12 x 18 x 1.5 inches, and are set out in linear arrays. Sample sites are a random sub-sample of vegetation sampling sites previously established on the island in scrub oak chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and baccharis riparian habitats. These sites are located across the middle section of the island, from just west of the Navy site, to the area of the Centinela pines. We understand that access to some sites may be limited at times due to hunting activities, and we are prepared to work around any such restrictions, at the advice of the reserve manager.
