Volunteer Bill Kenyon is available for the month of August to work on resource management and maintenance projects. I propose to base him full-time at UC Aug 2-30, to work on weed control projects, starting with roadside mowing and also working on other priority weed control projects. He could also be available for UC /TNC maintenance work or other projects, as you need. If a private room is not available for this period, I think he would be willing to use bunk space as available. If the time period is too long, I also have projects at Scorpion, and can put him to needed work over there. I propose to come out to UC Tuesday Aug 2 with Bill, and spend 2-3 days with him there, orienting him to island logistics, our weed control projects and UC and TNC operations (as best I can). Thereafter, he would stay in touch with Ken Owen, yourself, and me for project guidance. I can pay for at least part of his housing, and I will try to obtain NPS driving approval and at least occasional use of the NPS truck for him. Bill worked with me earlier this year, and I recommend him highly. He is a working Alaska salmon fisherman who is living and studying in this area (Ventura College; horticulture) when he is not fishing June/July in Alaska. Bill is a strong, hale, hearty, cheerful and agreeable 64 years old. He has also worked with USFWS and other agencies in Alaska on field studies of various birds and pinnipeds. He just finished working with FWS on a survey of an endangered frog in AK. As a qualified and experienced skipper, he is very competent at skiff operations as well as any other marine work. He is skilled at a number of trades, and happy to lend a hand wherever it is needed. I understand that your handy-guy Keith Harald has moved on, and I suggest that after you become acquainted with Bill, you consider him for this type of part-time general work for UC. Bill will have classes this fall/winter only on M/T/W so his schedule would probably allow for considerable island time. Of course, I have NOT mentioned this possibility to Bill in any way.
