Santa Cruz Island Reserve

Two to six small midden matrix samples will be collected from each of two prehistoric sites, both previously recorded, that are located on ridge tops in the island's interior. The area of each sample will be no more than 20x20 cm, and the holes will be backfilled. Topographic maps also will be made of each site. The objective of the fieldwork is to obtain collections for characterizing the nature and density of midden constituents and samples of shell or charcoal for radiocarbon dating. The data from these two sites will be joined with other data from similar sites located in the island's interior in order to identify variation through time in intensity of occupation of the island's interior.
