Santa Cruz Island Reserve

SCA intern Jim Roberts has been directing a team of 5 members of the CA Exotic Plant Management Team for the entire month of April on the east end of SCI, where they have been concentrating on eradication of feral olive trees. Jim and one team member would like to make a brief survey of ridgelines from Diablo Peak to Montanon ridge for outlier olives; also stone pine, peppertree, broom, etc. They propose to arrive from the east end via Island Packers on Friday, April 29. They would walk up the valley, ascend Diablo via Centinela access, traverse Diablo and the northern ridge, descend and come to field station Friday evening. They would stay the night and stay there, camping if need be. Early Saturday am they would depart on foot for Valley Peak via Mantanza Road, then traverse Isthmus and Montanon to return to their base camp at Smuggler's ranch. Both are well-experienced backcountry travellers and very stong hikers, and I am confident in their ability to safey accomplish this project. It will yield valuable weed distribution information. No vehicle support is required for this project.
