We would like to conduct a nitrogen uptake experiment in Christy Pines, near the top of the Laguna Canyon Road, in the general vicinity of the CSUN Pine weather station. The experiment will involve the application of dilute solutions of ammonia/nitrate that has been isotopically labeled with 15N. These solutions will be sprayed on four branches of each of five trees, with a tarp below to catch any excess. Uptake will be measured by sampling needles every 15 minutes, preserving them for later lab analysis. Sampling will continue for three hours, and then one more sample will be taken at 24 hours. All excess solution will be transported back to UCSB. Those trees misted with isotopically labeled fog will be marked with flagging tape, and the gps position recorded for future reference.
