Santa Cruz Island Reserve

A veterinary team consisting of a veterinarian (Dr. Winston Vickers, primary vet for the IWS fox recovery program) his assistanct (Susan Vickers), and the NPS lead fox technician (Susan Coppelli) will be capturing each fox housed at the SCI Central Valley captive fox colony to perform a routine veterinary exam. Foxes will be examined, weighed, vaccinated and blood samples will be collected for health screening. Exams will take place in the early mornings and late afternoons of June 26th and 27th. The duration of exams will depend largely on weather and temperature conditions. Capture and handling of the foxes will take place in the pens. Organization of equipment and preparing of blood slides will require electricity, so this work will be done at the field station or NPS Navy Site. If time permits, the vet team will also assist with exams being performed the same weekend at the colony located at the NPS Navy Site, where additional foxes are housed.
