Santa Cruz Island Reserve

UCSBs Office of Education Partnerships proposes to host a four (4) day workshop at the Santa Cruz Island Reserve, in partnership with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Under the guidance of ecologists Drs. Scott Sillett (Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute) and Mario Pesendorfer (SCBI/ Cornell) students will learn about current island biodiversity conservation and research efforts, including: island endemic birds, the Channel Island fox population, and efforts to restore the island habitats. Researchers from various institutions will mentor students. This year we hope to bring 15 students to the Santa Cruz Island Reserve, plus 5-6 workshop co-leaders. The UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars Program has provided local, first generation and/or low-income community college and 4-year STEM students with a variety of early research experiences. These experiences include guest speakers on topics that include fox phylogenetics to early human influences on biodiversity, 1-on-1 internships in field and lab research internships at UCSB, within the UC Reserve system and at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The program also includes a two-week intensive summer leadership experience at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and Virginia. Highlights of the project include a 4-day field research and applied conservation workshop for 21 students at the CSUCIs Santa Rosa Island field station.
