Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The purpose of our visit is similar to our visit to the Santa Cruz Island Reserve by a previous class in May 1998. We represent an advanced undergraduate and graduate level seminar class with a 15-day fieldtrip after the end of semester classes -- from 9 to 23 May 2004. Our objectives during our visit to the SCI Reserve is to focus on the plant ecology, plant geography, and flora of SCI and the California Channel Islands in general. We plan to conduct field visits to the following locations: Central Valley, Christy Beach, Coches Prietos Trail, and possibly the Pelican Bay Trail. We focus on observing the various plant communities and ecological dynamics of the terrestrial ecosystem. Our focus on the flora is to identify plants and to key out many of the dominant and common species. No enviornmental disturbance is planned, since our field objectives are mostly observational. Furthermore, no plant collections are necessary, although I would like to obtain permission to collect a few representative species (nothing listed or T&E) for the herbarium at the University of Oklahoma, which I curate. My taxonomic specialty is the family Scrophulariaceae. NOTE: This is my 2nd application. I previously filed an application on Jan 15 2004, but I have not heard whether it was processed or received.
