The Wishtoyo Foundations Chumash Cultural and Marine Science Summer Field Study is 7-day program that offers Native American high school students (ages 14-17) an opportunity to engage in cultural and marine science studies in partnership with Pitzer Colleges Native Youth to College Program, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, and the Chumash Maritime Association. 28 students and support staff will spend 4 days at Wishtoyos Chumash Village in Malibu, CA and 3 days at the UCSB Santa Cruz Island Reserve to introduce participants to the National Park and Marine Sanctuary, engage in outdoor recreation, participate in a citizen science research project, and be immersed in the Chumash peoples traditional homeland. This program fuses cutting-edge science and technology with the ancient wisdom of the Chumash a maritime people with a deep-rooted, 10,000-year relationship with the ocean and Channel Islands. This blend of indigenous knowledge, history, and Western science builds upon students cultural backgrounds, deepens their relationships with the natural world, and fosters academic confidence. Students will have the opportunity to participate in various recreational activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, camping, hiking, and guided native plant walks with Chumash naturalist, Nicholas Hummingbird. The curriculum will also incorporate citizen science research activities that contribute to current studies, such as investigating the effects of ocean acidification on red abalone, a species with traditional Chumash uses. We are currently investigating a number of data collection opportunities with the consultation of CINMS Education Director, Julie Bursek, Phyllis Grifman and Linda Chilton of Sea Grant, Pitzer College, Lisa Gilbane of BOEM, and Wishtoyos Chumash Marine Science Education Advisory Team. Wishtoyo has also been allotted time aboard NOAAs Research Vessel Shearwater for use in our activities and general exploration of the National Park and Marine Sanctuary, including the use of microscopes, plankton tows, ROVs, etc. Ultimately, we hope our program will serve to demystify scientific career paths for Native youth and inspire the next generation of stewards of cultural and environmental resources.
