Santa Cruz Island Reserve

My ongoing research focuses on connecting small-scale occupations with local resource exploitation and craft production on the south side of Santa Cruz Island during the middle and late Middle Period (approximately AD 600-1000); SCRI-845, located near the mouth of Laguna Canyon, is uniquely suited to address archaeological issues related to examining lithic and reed resources, some combination of which may have formed the foundation of production activities at the site. Previous work conducted in the summer of 2013 yielded evidence for lithic manufacture reliant on low-quality, locally abundant igneous toolstone as well as a range of standard domestic activities typical of small sites in region. The tools recovered, however, were relatively few in number and the excavations at SCRI-845 limited. In order to meaningfully compare the site's occupation to other sites of similar ages and sizes, it is necessary to expand the sample from SCRI-845. Using the grid established previously, I will excavate a randomly located, stepped 2m x 1m unit at the site to help characterize the subsurface deposits there. This will provide critical data concerning the density of tool production and maintenance at SCRI-845, allowing me to evaluate the site fully: as a residential base, a seasonal camp, or possibly even as an activity area with only limited residential components.
