Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The start of a new academic year brings new graduate students into a very tight-knit circle of Earth scientists at UCSB. The Royal Geologic Society of Goleta (RGSG) serves at the Earth Science department graduate student club and tries to plan an annual trip to the beautiful and local Santa Cruz Island Reserve. The RGSG is a very physically active group and will use any geologic excuse (e.g., nerdy rocks, local geologic examples) to get out on a hike and explore potential research topics and sites -- Santa Cruz Island has all these things and serves as a wonderful opportunity for graduate students to bond as a group. Additionally, some faculty and graduate students conduct research on the Channel Islands, and some such as Jim Boles, traditionally join us on the Island and lead field trips to interesting geologic points of interest. We usually stay at Christy Ranch because of its proximity to the most geologic diverse part of the island, hence shorter driving distance each day. To summarize, we plan to: hike, look at cool rocks, bond as a group, learn about local history and geology, and cook meals together.
