Daily Ecology Lessons will be conducted with the students and will include: (1st day) how to use a field guide and field journal to identify species and record observations. Since prior to arrival students will have formulated a research hypothesis as to what types of evidence can support the Island as being a valuable ecological asset. The instructor will guide the students research by converting the hypothesis in to more specific tasks, based on what the group knows can be both qualitative and quantitative information to support the value of biodiversity. On that first evening students will be paired up into 4 groups and will have the responsibility of working in their group that they will work in to collect the proper evidence/data to support the idea that the island provides greater ecosystem survival and a healthier environment for all. (2nd Day) Students will begin using their field journals and other research tools (Plant/Animal Id Guides, Binoculars, Field Journals, Measuring tape, data tables) to collect data at 2 locations on the island. One will be on the mountain north of the field station and another will be into the central valley, just west of the field station. One morning session and one after lunch session. In the evening students will be required to present their findings and type up a summary into a PPT to be edited and compiled for sharing back at STERN MASS upon our return. Students will also learn more about the species on the Island from the Instructor. (3rd Day) Students Will continue in their group to collect more data on 2 more locations on the island. This will require an all day hike to the beach, the southern end, where more qualitative observations can be made on the value of species to humans and the environment. On the hike back students will be required to share in at least 1 species they identified and to input the image they draw or photograph into a PPT to later be shared at STERN MASS. This identification will happen as students hike back from the beach. In the evening they In the evening students will be required to present their findings related to their group project and type up a summary into a PPT to be edited and compiled for sharing back at STERN MASS upon our return. Students will also learn more about the natural history found on Island from the Instructor. (4th Day) This will be our return day, so it shall consist of primarily clean up, packing and returning to the beach for departure. Students will be required to share one species they will remember and why.
