Santa Cruz Island Reserve

This is a lower division course that introduces students to the flora, and fauna, and the ecological unique of islands. The course emphasizes species identification, local ecological patterns, and invasive species. We will be visiting both coastal/marine and upland habitats, and mapping local resources. Cuttings of common/typical plants will be made to be used for study and in a final lab practicum. We will likely conduct basic plant transects for demonstration purposes only. Wildlife will be observed but not manipulated. Up to 6 wildlife cameras in association with bait stations will be set up and monitored for the duration of the visit. We would like to having housing for 20 students an 3 instructors/field technicians, but tent camping is also an option. Access to general laboratory facilities is desirable. We would also be willing consider possible volunteer projects in which students may be able to contribute to the facility's needs, such as re-vegetation efforts, resources monitoring, etc.
