Ocean for Life promotes cross-cultural understanding between world cultures through the greater appreciation of the ocean and how it connects us all. The Ocean for Life program is a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Program, and Scubanauts International in collaboration with National Geographic Society, American University's Center for Environmental Filmmaking, and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. The mission of the Ocean for Life program is to provide high-quality, immersive ocean field studies and follow-on education programs to facilitate cross-cultural learning, appreciation and lasting experiences between multi-national students. Through a competitive application process, students from Western and Greater Middle Easter countries are selected to participate free of charge in the Ocean for Life program and July 2011 field study experience being hosted by Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. More info can be found at http://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/education/ofl and http://oceanforlife.org. We are interested in making Santa Cruz Island the home base for our exploration of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and National Park. In order for the students to gain hands-on experience of the ocean science topics and issues they will have learned about on the mainland while staying at UCSB, we find it important for them to have an opportunity to stay on Santa Cruz Island. During this immersive field study, students will also be photo and video documenting their experiences with National Geographic Society Media Camp mentors. Science topics of interest for the entire two-week field study include: blue whale/ship strikes; global climate change and ocean acidification; island ecosystem recovery, marine reserves; and indigenous peoples (i.e Chumash). We look to incorporate activities on Santa Cruz Island related to these science topics, such as LiMPETS sandy beach monitoring at Christy's Ranch, a combination hike/kayak from Prisoners to Pelican; exploration of kelp forest ecology; REEF fish identification; and GPS activities. We have no intention of collecting any species, or introducing any new species or genotypes while on the island. Our stay on Santa Cruz Island would be for educational purposes only. We would invite the scientists in residence to share with us the work they are conducting on Santa Cruz Island to enrich and enhance our experience.
