Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The purpose of this field trip is to educate the students about the natural history of the Northern Channel Islands and compare it to that of the Southern Channel Islands. We will be discussing in class the unique ecological challenges faced by islands and how anthropogenic pressures have shaped those problems and our responses. On Friday, once we arrive & unpack, the students will hike out to the swimming hole. We will identify native and non-native plants on our walk and also discuss the geology of the island as we walk along the river bed. On Saturday we will hike students up the ridge and over to Coches beach. Again we will be examining the natural history of the island and making comparisons with Southern Channel islands and the mainland. On Sunday we will pack up and head back to Prisoner's Harbor, if time permits we will hike to Pelican Bay before getting on the boat to go back to the mainland.
