Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The Nature Conservancy has been conducting island fox recovery activities on Santa Cruz Island since 2001. In 2008 TNC streamlined recovery activities and used methods designed to address specific recovery needs. The annual population census method consisted of trapping grids using Scenario B in the Rubin et al, (2007) monitoring framework. Disease management was made up of a vaccination program within core island areas, blood sample collection, and radio-monitoring of young foxes unlikely to die of non-disease causes. Survival monitoring of radio-collared foxes was conducted throughout the year by TNC. The objective of this project is to continue to collect population monitoring data through grid trapping and to continue disease management activities (blood collection and vaccination) to protect the population against the threat of rabies and canine distemper viruses. Monitoring island fox and spotted skunk population trends via mark-recapture methods is critical to understanding how island fox recovery may impact spotted skunk numbers on Santa Cruz Island. Disease management will reduce the risk of a future catastrophic decline due to rabies or canine distemper.
