Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The purpose of this trip to to acquaint the students with the natural history of the northern channel islands. Throughout the semester, we have studied the California channel islands, reading and discussing scientific papers on sustainability, island conservation, native & endemic species, dealing with invasive species, tourism, fires, and the effects of DDT on the bald eagle. We are an environmental studies group and believe one of the best ways to increase our students environmental awareness is to get them into the environment so they can observe and experience it. Upon our arrival to the field station on Friday, we plan to hike up the road away from the field station to the stream bed/ stream and look for native/ endemic plant species and birds as we hike. Friday evening we will have a group discussion comparing the habitats of Santa Cruz island with Santa Catalina island. On Saturday I would like to take the students out in a truck to see other parts of the island. I would like to drive them past the central valley to see the Santa Cruz fault, past the Santa Cruz pines, and then hike down to Christy beach. On Sunday, we will head to Prisoner's harbor and hike from there to Pelican bay to examine the rocky intertidal zone and discuss how it compares to similar habitats on the mainland.
