Santa Cruz Island Reserve

We seek to continue our ecological study of Island Scrub-Jays and other passerine birds on Santa Cruz Island, CA, which began in 2005. Our goals are to monitor jay population size, reproductive success, breeding behavior, individual survival rates, and prevalence of West Nile Virus (WNV). This work will involve capturing jays and other passerine bird species in mist nets and baited traps, banding the birds, taking small blood samples, and releasing animals unharmed. We need to capture and collect blood from multiple bird species on the island to assess WNV prevalence in the avian community. Jay nests will be found and monitored using standard field methods used by our group for more than 15 years.
