Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The research proposed is a continuation of our project titled "Reproductive ecology, habitat associations, and West Nile Virus prevalence in landbirds on Santa Cruz Island" that started in fall 2007. We will conduct avifaunal surveys to determine: 1) avian distribution and abundance, and 2) prevalence of West Nile Virus (WNV) for the two focal species and for other breeding and overwintering landbirds on Santa Cruz Island. Surveys will consist of fixed-radius point counts and mist-netting. All landbirds captured in nets will be banded, measured, and weighed. In addition, blood samples will be collected from each individual. Pain and distress to individuals will be minimal, and all birds will be released unharmed.
