Santa Cruz Island Reserve

The purpose of this research is to conduct systematic pedestrian survey of selected prehistoric sites on Santa Cruz Island Reserve as part of my dissertation research to address questions of seasonality and settlement on the island during the Holocene. Systematic survey will be carried out in order to identify the prehistoric cultural resources occurring with a large watershed just east of Platt Harbor on the northern coast of the island. My project seeks to generate new data regarding the seasons of occupation for archaeological sites along a previously uninvestigated area of Santa Cruz Island which connects areas of potential terrestrial resources (i.e. oak woodlands, sage scrub, and grasslands) and the rocky shore headlands hospitable to rich marine resources. The results of this phase of research will provide a better understanding of how earlier island inhabitants mitigated seasonal fluctuations in the availability of resources within the island environment, as well as contribute baseline information regarding a region of the island that has yet to be systematically investigated for cultural resources.
