The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) was recently petitioned to list the Channel Island Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus anthonyi) as endangered throughout its range, which is limited to Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands. The petition was subsequently withdrawn due to lack of adequate information to evaluate potential threats. However, the Service has recognized that the Island Shrike?s abundance continues to decline, with a total population estimate of 45 to 85 individuals combined across the three islands, down from approximately 300 to 900 individuals in the early 20th Century. Effective conservation of the species will require additional research to evaluate the potential threats. Habitat loss has been identified as the most likely threat that may be driving the decline, and therefore should be the first factor investigated. The Service, with cooperators The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the National Park Service (NPS), has proposed surveys, population monitoring, and ecological studies of the Channel Island Loggerhead Shrike to support pre-listing conservation efforts. PRBO's surveys will provide the following: 1. Survey Santa Cruz Island for shrike abundance. Shrike abundance is least understood on Santa Cruz Island, which is the largest of the three islands on which shrikes occur. PRBO will conduct a two-month study surveying the island for shrike occurrences and nesting activity. Additionally, the contractor would conduct at least one separate intensive 3-day survey to document all shrikes across a subset of the island. These same techniques have been successfully employed on San Clemente Island to study and conserve the federally endangered San Clemente Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus mearnsi). The goal of this research is to develop a population estimate for Channel Island loggerhead shrikes on Santa Cruz Island.
