Santa Cruz Island Reserve

There are two goals for our visit. We would like to explore the feasibility of a class visit for Spring, 2008 (Dr. Eernisse's Field Marine Biology course and Dr. Sandquist's Desert Ecology or a later similar course). For this goal, we intend to survey potential places to take students and learn more about the Reserve in advance of a visit. The second goal is related to our individual research programs. Dr. Eernisse is already studying the comparative phylogeography of the West Coast, with substantial current focus on genetic transitions that occur at Pt. Conception. For this research, it is important to eventually expand the scope of the comparisons to Santa Cruz Id. and others of the Channel Is. that are near Pt. Conception. Likewise, Dr. Sandquist already has ongoing research on the physiological ecology of selected plants related to fog, and is interested in expanding the scope of his research beyond Catalina Id., the present island of emphasis.
