My research objective is framed within the study of coastal gatherers and their subsistence strategies. More specifically, I pursue to understand how the human groups interacted and used coastal resources through their shellfish gathering strategies. My research will be undertaken on Santa Cruz Island using malacological data from shell middens, which will be compared with available data about present and past intertidal fauna and environmental conditions. I intend to compare the diversity and abundance of shellfish species accumulated in the shell middens with the natural variation of these resources. This quantitative malacological analysis will be coupled with a spatial analysis between the faunal composition of the intertidal zone and the shell middens in order to assess the presence of spatial covariance. This analytical step is essential to establish the presence of different gathering strategies on the intertidal zone because it will allow me to discern cultural from environmental factors in the archaeological record. Once harvesting strategies are identified through the analytical approach, an interpretative effort will be done to provide an insight about the reasons for the election of different strategies.
