We will continue our inter-island (Santa Cruz and Catalina) study of orange-crowned warbler breeding ecology in 2007. Since 2005, we have been studying the breeding ecology and habitat selection of orange-crowned warblers over a mesic ? xeric habitat gradient on Catalina Island. These data will provide us with additional insights into how warblers will respond to habitat restoration, because some degraded vegetation on Bulrush Canyon?s slopes has will not yet transitioned into high-quality, mesic habitat. On Santa Cruz, we will to expand our Coches Prietos study plot in 2007 to include a broader mesic ? xeric gradient. In addition, we will expand our research on Santa Cruz to examine how warbler nest concealment and parental behavior interacts with scrub-jay habitat use patterns to determine nest predation risk. Helen Sofaer (Ph.D. student, Colorado State University) will assess the spatial extent over which these processes occur to better understand how different types of landscape changes may affect predation risk. Her dissertation will focus on building a predictive understanding of nest fate, which will advance ecological theory by providing mechanistic links between life history theory, landscape ecology, and population demography.
